Treaty One Nation Responds to Kamloops Residential School Mass Gravesite

The Treaty One Nation is saddened to learn of the mass gravesite found at the former Kamloops Residential School and we send our sincerest condolences to the families and communities of these beloved children. Unfortunately, this is likely one of many gravesites surrounding these schools, including those right here in Treaty One territory.
It is an unfortunate reality and reminder of the genocide and racism indigenous people have faced in Canada. From the time of contact, we have been subjected to a multitude of attacks and efforts to extinguish our people, and stealing our children and future is the greatest of assaults on our Nations.
From Indian Residential Schools, Day Schools, the Sixties Scoop, forced sterilization of our women, and now the Millennial Scoop, the colonial governments continue to wage war on our families.
As Hon. Murray Sinclair, member of T1N Peguis First Nation, has said, “We cannot have reconciliation without truth”. There must be more honesty in the way our history and stories are told – including the ugly truth about Canada and the churches’ roles in these awful eras and violence on Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island.
We stand with survivors and families as they continue to tell their truths, and we will continue to rebuild our Nations in ceremony and language, with the help and guidance of Gitche Manitou and our valued Knowledge Keepers.
