Statement from Treaty One Nation regarding Bill 56 Infringement

“Once again, Brian Pallister and his Caucus are attempting to impose provincial law in First Nations where they have no jurisdiction. The passing of Bill 56 that will attempt to ban smoking on reserve is an egregious overstep by the Pallister government on our Treaty, UNDRIP, and constitutionally-protected rights as First Nations people. While we encourage our citizens to be smoke-free, we maintain our own authority to make decisions and laws in our own communities, including in the gaming centres and VLT lounges. The Nations of Treaty One will not allow this infringement to go unchecked – we will protect our inherent jurisdiction and right to self-govern in every means possible.”
