ABOUT US

Formed in 2023, Treaty One Nations Inc. (T1N) represents the seven signatory First Nations of Treaty No. 1. T1N advances collective self-governance, cultural preservation, and community well-being, while overseeing the development of the jointly held Treaty One Lands.


POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Property & Planning, the Environmental Coordinator supports environmental stewardship across Treaty One Territory by coordinating environmental initiatives, research, engagement, partnerships, and project delivery.

Working collaboratively with the seven Treaty One First Nations, Treaty One leadership, advisory councils, Knowledge Keepers, and external partners, the position helps strengthen collective environmental capacity and advance a coordinated approach to land, air, and water stewardship.

The Environmental Coordinator supports environmental initiatives that reflect the priorities, knowledge, and interests of the Treaty One First Nations.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate environmental stewardship projects and initiatives related to land, water, climate change, contaminated sites, environmental assessments, and other Treaty One priorities
  • Support environmental project planning, implementation, and delivery
  • Coordinate consultants, technical advisors, working groups, and technical tables
  • Track project timelines, milestones, deliverables, approvals, and reporting requirements
  • Conduct environmental research and analysis
  • Review monitoring data, technical reports, and other environmental information
  • Participate in site visits and field activities
  • Monitor government policies, legislation, regulatory developments, and consultation processes that may affect Treaty One Territory
  • Support the preparation of briefings, responses, recommendations, reports, and presentations
  • Work collaboratively with Treaty One First Nations, leadership, advisory councils, Knowledge Keepers, government, and external partners
  • Support the respectful inclusion of First Nations knowledge and perspectives in environmental initiatives
  • Identify funding, partnership, training, and capacity-building opportunities
  • Support funding applications and reporting requirements
  • Maintain environmental information, project records, and supporting documentation
  • Translate environmental research, monitoring results, technical information, and engagement findings into clear and accessible materials for Treaty One leadership, First Nations, funders, and other audiences

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources, Indigenous Studies, or a related field
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered

Experience

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience in environmental coordination, environmental planning, community engagement, project coordination, First Nation land stewardship, or a related field is preferred

Cultural Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of Treaty One First Nations culture, history, inherent and Treaty rights, and relationships to lands, waters, and natural resources
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and respect for cultural and community protocols
  • Knowledge of First Nations approaches to environmental stewardship
  • Understanding of the respectful inclusion of First Nations knowledge and perspectives in environmental initiatives

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge of environmental stewardship principles and issues related to land, water, climate change, contaminated sites, environmental monitoring, and environmental assessments
  • General knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation, regulatory processes, policies, and consultation processes relevant to First Nations and Treaty One Territory
  • Knowledge of environmental project planning, monitoring, reporting, funding requirements, and performance measurement
  • Understanding of environmental research, technical reports, monitoring data, and other sources of environmental information
  • Strong project coordination and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, timelines, deliverables, and reporting requirements
  • Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to review, synthesize, and communicate environmental and technical information
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparing reports, briefing notes, presentations, proposals, and other materials for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong engagement, facilitation, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work respectfully with First Nations, leadership, Knowledge Keepers, government, consultants, and external partners
  • Ability to coordinate meetings, working groups, community engagements, and environmental project activities
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, time-management, and follow-up skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing competing priorities and deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and the ability to learn and use project tracking, data management, mapping, and environmental information systems as required
