Treaty One Development Corporation Named “Ten to Watch”
Indigenomics Institute Cites Leadership, Excellence and Innovation in Re-Developing Former Kapyong Barracks
One of the corporations at the forefront of Canada’s burgeoning indigenous economy is none other than the Treaty One Development Corporation (T1DC), responsible for re-developing the 160-acre site at the former Kapyong Barracks in Winnipeg.
In being recently named one of the ‘10 to Watch’ by the Indigenomics Institute, T1DC CEO Whelan Sutherland said that what most inspires him about the project is seeing the seven Treaty 1 First Nations unify and work together with the Kapyong neighbours and the City.
“This collaboration is intended to create a $1 Billion-dollar, multi-use project that seamlessly integrates with neighbouring communities,” said Sutherland, “while laying the ground-work for what will be the boldest, most dynamic indigenous economic zone in Canada.”
The development at Kapyong is just part of the growing Indigenous economy which is expected to skyrocket from its current value of 32 billion to 100 billion in the next five years.
In accepting the award, COO, Tim Daniels thanked the Indigenomics Institute for unleashing a national Indigenous economic agenda. “Our goal is to drive partnerships, investment and long-term growth to sustain our communities for generations to come,” he said.
Each year, the Indigenomics Institute releases a top 10 to watch list which identifies indigenous businesses that demonstrates excellence, innovation, leadership and a commitment to action towards the growth of the indigenous economy.
The Treaty One Government is a confederation of the seven First Nations signatories to Treaty One, signed on August 3, 1871, which includes Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, Long Plain First Nation, Peguis First Nation, Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation, Sagkeeng First Nation, Sandy Bay First Nation, and Swan Lake First Nation. Its development arm, the Treaty One Development Corporation, was established to lead the re-development at the site of the former Kapyong Barracks.
