Treaty One’s Thunderbird Hut Hits the Ice at The Forks

MEDIA ADVISORY

Winnipeg, MB – January 29, 2021 – Through a collaboration between Treaty One Development Corporation (T1DC) and Scatliff + Miller + Murray (SMM), The Benesii (Thunderbird) hut will be one of the newest additions to The Winnipeg Foundation Centennial River Trail at The Forks this winter.
The Benesii, which is inspired by the harmony and balance-keeping thunderbird with colour patterns based on indigenous beadwork, will be unveiled as part of the Warming Huts v.2021 on January 29, 2021.
“We hope that The Benesii inspires conversations about our relationships to land, water, its first peoples and our treaties,” said David Thomas, Planning and Design Manager, T1DC. “A big thank you to PCL Construction for helping to bring our vision to life and to The Forks for providing us the opportunity to share our creation.”
The hut will sit on Treaty # 1 Territory where Indigenous nations have met for thousands of years beginning at the Forks and with the intention to travel to various 150 celebrations within Manitoba communities this summer.
