Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day – June 21
Kapyong Barracks Lands
 
(Winnipeg, MB) On June 21, seven drums and seven tipis at Kapyong Barracks represent seven Treaty 1 Nations to share information with the public on the development of this area.
 
“As we recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, we invite all citizens of Winnipeg to join us for a day of celebration, information, and dialogue on the development of Kapyong Barracks lands,” said Chief Dennis Meeches.
 
The event is hosted by Treaty One Development Corporation and supported by Canada Lands Company – both in attendance. The public is invited to take part in an information session and to enjoy dance performances. Dancers with regalia are invited to join intertribal and category dance.
 
The day begins at 8am with a sunrise pipe ceremony. Grand Entry at 12 noon with welcoming remarks, followed by dance performances. Information session at begins at 1pm.  The celebration concludes at 8 pm with greetings from three levels of government and dignitaries throughout day
 
“We look forward to a great day of sharing,” said Chief  Dennis Meeches (Long Plain) spokesperson of the  seven Treaty 1 Nations and also attending on this day include: Chief Glenn Hudson (Peguis); Chief Deborah Smith (Brokenhead Ojibway); Chief Derrick Henderson (Sagkeeng); Chief Lance Roulette (Sandy Bay); Chief Francine Meeches (Swan Lake); and Chief Craig Alexander (Roseau River).
 
Also attending throughout the day are special guests.
 
National Indigenous Peoples Day was established in 1996 and celebrates the cultural diversity of the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples.
