Position: Director of Finance
Reports to: Director of Operations & Chief and Council
Employment Type: Full-Time
Rate of Pay: Based on Experience

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Finance oversees the financial operations of Swan Lake First Nation (SLFN), ensuring effective financial management, planning, and reporting. Reporting to the Director of Operations and Chief and Council, the Director plays a critical role in maintaining financial compliance, advising leadership, and supporting strategic initiatives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement financial strategies, budgets, and policies for SLFN.
  • Prepare and present regular financial reports to Chief and Council.
  • Oversee and manage all accounting functions, including accounts payable, receivable, and payroll.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, contribution agreements, and SLFN policies.
  • Collaborate with department heads to prepare budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Liaise with external auditors, government agencies, and funding organizations.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations for organizational decision-making.
  • Supervise and support the Finance Department staff.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Work under the authority of the SLFN Chief and Council with supervision from the Director of Operations.
  • Ensure financial operations adhere to SLFN’s Administrative, Financial, and Personnel Policy Manuals.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of all financial reporting requirements.
  • Develop and monitor budgets in collaboration with SLFN leadership and departments.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of financial documents, contracts, and agreements.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • CPA designation is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of financial management experience, preferably in a First Nations organization.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience leading a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and financial tools (e.g., Sage, QuickBooks, Excel).
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities is an asset.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must hold and maintain a valid Class 5 driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Must provide a clear Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Abuse Registry Check.
  • Applicants must be bondable.
  • Must be willing to submit to random drug testing.
