Meet Tyrell Courchene, Store Manager of Oodena Gas & Convenience!

To mark this year’s Indigenous History Month, we’d like to give a special shoutout to one of our newest and most impactful staff, Tyrell Courchene!

As the very first employee of the first business to open on Treaty One’s reclaimed Naawi-Oodena lands, Tyrell Courchene is quite literally helping to fuel a new future.

As a proud member of Sagkeeng First Nation at just 27 years of age, Tyrell brings over seven years of frontline retail and customer service experience—including four in leadership roles—to his current position as Store Manager at Oodena Gas & Convenience (OGC). Before joining OGC, he served as a Supervisor at the Sagkeeng Superstore, where he became known for team development, reliability, and deep ties to community.

At OGC, Tyrell has played a foundational role—building the team from scratch by hiring 25 staff members, 24 of whom are First Nation members with 21 being from a Treaty One First Nation, including himself. This achievement demonstrates his commitment to First Nation-centric economic opportunity and employment. Known for his ability to empower those around him, Tyrell cultivates a workplace that prioritizes growth, respect, and accountability.

Beyond his work, Tyrell is just as dedicated to his community. He’s served as a minor hockey referee for 11 years and held the role of Referee-in-Chief with Sagkeeng Minor Hockey for two years. Every winter, he helps organize recreational teams so more youth can get on the ice and participate in local tournaments.

Tyrell is also a devoted husband, father of three boys, and an avid fan of both hockey and golf. His leadership style is grounded in family, fueled by community, and focused on building a legacy for future generations.
