POSITION SUMMARY: Brokenhead Ojibway Nation‘s Development Corp. is establishing a bison farm operation and is looking for a Herdsman with experience with bison, as well as beef cattle. The herd will be initially 13 head of bison. Due to the nature of the job, you must be physically fit and able to lift up to 100lbs. Successful candidates may be required to be flexible with their hours of work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Feed and tend to bison
  • Maintain bison pens
  • Ensure fences are working and bison have access to water, salt, and minerals
  • Separate and wean off calves from bison cows in the fall
  • Implement pasture and pen breeding programs
  • Organize roundups, arrange for ear tags, vaccinate, deworm, and administer vitamins and other necessary upkeep annually
  • Follow safety and bio-security procedures
  • Recognize and treat certain livestock health problems
  • Remove bison using low-stress techniques
  • Select bison for slaughter and sale
  • Operate farm machinery and equipment
  • Recommend breeding program changes to prevent inbreeding
  • Make hay in summer as required for the herd
  • Work with the Province of Manitoba, bison experts, and the Manitoba Bison Association
  • Perform general farm duties
  • Supervise general farm workers

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Class 5 and Class 1 license required
  • Keep and understand the current prices of bison for sale
  • Arrange for assistance if there are problems with coyotes or wolves bothering the herd
  • Experience operating farm equipment and capable of performing necessary maintenance and minor repairs
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Record Check
