Chief Dennis Meeches Joins Call For Inquiry into Death of William Ahmo

Indigenous Man Killed While in Custody

Chief Dennis Meeches today joined calls for an Inquiry into the tragic death of William Ahmo on Sunday. Ahmo was found unresponsive after an incident with correctional officers and was then taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

“The murder of William Ahmo of Sagkeeng First Nation is both tragic and particularly shocking, and we send sincere condolences to the family, friends, and community for the loss of their relative,” said Chief Dennis Meeches, Spokesperson for Treaty One Nation. “Officers at Headingley Correctional Centre are responsible for the safety of those in correctional facilities, not to cause harm, and William suffered significant harm that ultimately caused his death on Sunday.”

Meeches went on to say that he fully supports Chief Derrick Henderson’s call for transparency during the investigation and an Inquiry into William Ahmo’s death.  “Those who are responsible for the killing of this man must be held fully accountable for their actions,” he concluded.
