Treaty One Statement On The $40-Billion Compensation Agreement For Families Harmed By Canada’s Child Welfare System

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg MB – The federal government announced details of the agreement that would see compensation for First Nations children on-reserve who were removed form their homes between April 1991 and March 2022.

“This agreement could offer hope for First Nations people in Manitoba that have suffered through these traumatic experiences,” said Treaty One Spokesperson Chief Dennis Meeches. “Although this does not take away the damage that has happened, we hope that this will bring change to Canada’s child welfare system,” concluded Chief Meeches.
